DESCRIPTION

BEAM is a 2D puzzle platformer where players must get to the exit by using their teleportation (BEAM) ability. Aim, shoot and teleport to your BEAM in order to maneuver through 30 levels of obstacles and puzzles. Use your environment to get the BEAM to the places you need to teleport to.
CONTRIBUTION

-
Designed and implemented 25 of the game's 30 levels.
-
Implemented several game mechanics.
-
Created character sprite and animations.
-
Created the majority of the environmental art assets.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

-
This being my first game project, the idea was to create a game with simple mechanics that are layered on top one another. Teleportation was a simple enough novelty that could be enhanced with various environmental-based mechanics.

-
What is often more interesting that teleportation itself is the means by how players choose where we can/want to teleport to, which is how the central "BEAM" mechanic was introduced.

-
Through the constraints of having a straight line ball/bullet travelling, we were able to create interesting environmental-based mechanics such as reflection as well as teleporting the BEAM itself.

-
Owing to the fact that the game's central pillar was spatial-reasoning, the levels were made to be single screen, bite-sized challenges where players have perfect information of what is happening and how to achieve their goals.
